operating officer larry baer will assume mr. neukom's duty. saying that neukom is being forced out. the mainly sticking point, money. >> spending money without consulting them on items they thought they should be consulted about. >> it's like, what happened? >> reporter: tonight, fans are learning about the shakeup at the top. >> we're the fans, we come here to watch them play. >> reporter: some fans say they're not expecting any big changes, because the real power resides with the general manager. >> as long as sabean is there. he's the guy that makes the deal. if sabean is there, and they don't have as many injuries, they'll win again next year. >> reporter: others worry changes at the top mean changes on the field, and that's not necessarily a good thick. >> it's one whole big family.

it all spreads. >> reporter: the giants say the outgoing ceo, bill neukom and larry baer will meet with the media tomorrow morning at 11:00 a.m. we will be there for that meeting tomorrow. later in sports, mark ibanez will be here with more on tonight's game, and the giants sweep of the padres. hundreds of hotel workers filled san francisco streets today. they marched from union square to the financial district. calling for an end to a two year labor dispute. amber lee is live with when both sides will go back to the table. >> we're in front of the embarcadero, where they have been balking the picket line since last thursday. in two hours, the strike will be over. but earlier tonight, workers hit the streets to express their demand. hundreds of hotel workers started the strike at union

square. joining a strike by hyatt workers in san francisco, los angeles, and honolulu to demand better treatment. one worker told us, she's a switch board operator. she says employees are underpaid and overworked. >> if somebody wants to go to the restroom, there will be somebody else to answer. >> we've got more than 20 years. 20 years, 25. and they do not appreciate what we've done. >> reporter: this woman says she's been cleaning rooms at the hyatt for 12 years. she told us, lifting a mattress that weighs 150 pounds is hard work. hyatt workers have been without a contract for two years. a key sticking point, the union wants a clause in the new

agreement that would allow workers to strike. >> certainly won't be granted by hyatt. >> the other hotels aren't as abusive of their employees as hyatt is. >> reporter: one says it will cause minimal disruption. the only problem is the noise out here. >> yes. >> reporter: the march ended at the foot of market street. they topped? front of the hyatt, embarcadero, and justin herman plaza. both sides are set to resume labor talks on monday. amber lee, ktvu, channel 2 news. u.s. supreme court justice, ruth bader ginsburg and other passengers arrived safely at san francisco international this evening, after they had to evacuate their original flight. the passengers arrived at sfo around 7:30 this evening and security escorted justice ginsburg out. as the united airlines flight

was about to take off, smoke was seen coming out of one of the engines and the passengers and crew had to slide down the emergency chutes, including a mother, holding her newborn. >> i hit the ground and rolled. the guy behind me said he saw me fall with the baby. >> justice ginsburg was invited to san francisco by hastings college of law. she is scheduled to be there tomorrow. iran's judiciary today said its still reviewing the bail provisions set for $1 million total. yesterday, announced the uc berkely grads would be released in days. they seem to be caught in a power struggle. one positive sign, a private jet was sent from amman to bring the two men back to the united states. secretary of state hillary clinton is in the bay area

tonight. at 10:30, the topic of a major summit happening this week and its focus on women. tonight, we have home video that was shot before the firefighters even got there. it all happened in san jose on bear valley lane. not far from interstate 680. there were injuries, and at one point, a very close call. >> reporter: this is the aftermath of a 3 alarm fire in san jose. two of the units are completely destroyed. eight people are without their homes tonight. the flames rushed through hot, and spread quickly. neighbor virginia santos took this home video, even before firefighters arrived. >> i heard like an explosion. i heard glass, and then i ran

back over here again. >> reporter: 70 firefighters rushed to the scene. at one point, they urgently scrambled out of the building, just before a portion of the roof collapsed. firefighters say that flames got into the attic. >> that fire once it gets up in the attic space, runs through the attic, with no wood members in there to stop the fire from progressing. >> reporter: one man went to the hospital with second degree burns. another was treated for smoke inhalation. alberto was asleep when the fire broke out. >> i was running at the backdoor, and all i saw was the flames and smoke. >> reporter: there is no official cause of the fire. he says the unit next to his was being renovated. >> they were trying to pull out some [ inaudible ] and might have hit a gas line, and it caught on fire. >> reporter: best of all, their

pet parakeet is alive. >> everything is available. the family is not. >> reporter: the fire department estimates damages will be more than $1 million. live in san jose, lloyd lacuesta, ktvu, channel 2 news. crews were busy fixing a water main break in oakland. it happened around 10:00 a.m. this morning on the 500 block of merit avenue. one said it created a muddy stream that ran down the street for hours. she described what sounded like a big rainstorm outside her house this morning. >> the water was just spurting out of the concrete itself. i expected, i don't know, a manhole that would be more expectable. >> a ktvu news crew is on the scene tonight, and just told us the water main has now been capped. the area is in the southwestern part of the city, with hills dale avenue on the north and foothill drive on the

about 150 people staged a noisy protest outside of the san francisco financial district this morning. the target is george markets. the owner of the university of california regents. the protesters say uc has not paid a living wage to workers while it keeps raising tuition to students. they showed up to demand a promised pay raise. they said the state allocated $3 million for 8,000 employees as part of an effort to raise them out of poverty.

>> they just think about themselves. they don't think about their workers. we workers keep the area running too. we're important. >> at that meeting, the uc president said talks are going on with the workers, and he is hopeful an agreement will be reached soon. only on 2 tonight, we have uncovered documents that are raising serious questions about why san francisco declared a pier unsafe, and told residents to leave. >> reporter: as channel 2 first reported last week, building inspectors for the san francisco port have declared pier 38 unsafe. the mayor said it was not done so the organizers of america's cup can take it over. >> we don't have any plans to use pier 38. it's not been part of draft plans. >> reporter: but the former president of the board of

supervisors isn't convinced. >> there certainly has been discussion within the city's agencies about includes pier 38. >> reporter: according to the environment impact report, america's cup may use the waterfront area up to pier 38 on the right, but not the pier itself. we obtained a copy of the september 2010 agreement between the city and race organizers, that identifies pier 38 as an area for spectators. the president says the agreement refers only to the waters around pier 38. now pier 38 is declared unsafe. >> this is a source of revenue to the port. so why would they kick out all of these tenants, if they didn't have other plans for pier 38? >> reporter: the inspection report lists about 30 potential

fire, plumbing and electrical hazards. >> to confirm, whether or not it's absolutely necessary for them to meetly move. >> if you're moving from one apartment to the next, it's a pain. if you're moving from one business to another, you have to move all the code. >> reporter: odds are, they won't be coming back. in san francisco, rob roth, ktvu, channel 2 news. bart is having to explain a questionable move. one that it acknowledges was a mistake. ktvu obtained internal emails showing bart's chief spokesman solicited riders to speak at a news conference about the recent protest. he also coached them on what to say, and spent more than $800 for suv's to bring them there. just one man showed up. bart's president said johnson was wrong to do that. >> we will not be doing this again. i think it was an error in judgment, it's unnecessary. we don't have to spend money, or provide a script, and we

won't do so again. >> reporter: bob franken says he doesn't think johnson should be fired. johnson has been on family leave and is scheduled to return to work on monday. saying the school is failing african american and other students of color. >> historically, our students have been overlooked for a number of reasons. we're tired of looking at the statistics and seeing the numbers drop from one year to the next. >> tonight, the naacp went before the school board to talk about issues to address what they say is the disparity of education within the oakland school district. just last week, the district released a list of 12 schools that could be closed next year. some community members are infuriated, because they say it contained high performing schools that primarily served african american students. the college board is offering a positive spin when it comes to that drop. for the high school class of 2011, the mean reading score

fell 3 points from 2010's mean to 497. that is the lowest mean score since 1972. the average math score dipped by one point. the critical reading scores dropped 2 points. saying it's a reflection of the large number and diversity of students who took the test. the most in the history of the s.a.t. republicans questioned the wisdom of the obama administration, for giving $535 million in guaranteed loans to solyndra in 2009. the hearing comes after the solar company suddenly declared bankruptcy two weeks ago and laid off 1100 workers. >> in this time of record debt, i question whether the government is qualified to asks a capitalist. >> reporter: the republicans are demanding answers why the obama administration pushed for

the loan. today, the lending officer said the loan commitment originated during the bush administration. >> the transaction went through nearly three years of rigorous, internal, and external due diligence. >> is it possible that one of the things that changed was a political influence? >> i don't believe so sir, i wasn't there, but there's no indication. >> reporter: republicans are also releasing internal white house emails they say show the loan approval was rushed, so the vice president could announce it at the company's groundbreaking in 2009. president obama visited it last year, touting its green energy jobs. now the republicans say the president has hurt his own cause. >> a lack of critical review, i think is the greatest threat for future solar. >> reporter: democrats are accusing republicans of a partisan fishing expedition.

>> if you are a science denier, there's no reason for government to invest in clean energy. >> reporter: one white house analyst wrote in a march 2009 deal, this deal is not ready for prime time. republicans say the internal email showed the administration was closely monitoring the progress of the loan, even as analysts were voicing serious concerns about the risk involved. tips from the community have led to the arrest of a man accused of robbing a safeway store in oakland. oakland police arrested phillip taylor of richmond yesterday. authorities say taylor robbed the safeway on september 3. police also say taylor fled on foot, while firing his gun at security guards. the nation's busiest border crossing has reopened tonight to pedestrians. it remains closed to drivers

after a part of a canopy collapsed this morning. the crossing connects san diego and mexico. authorities say the canopy fell over vehicle lanes and injured 11 people. about 50,000 vehicles enter the country each day at san ysidro. tomorrow morning, year going to see a lot -- you're going to see a lot of fog. it's going to get into into some of the inland bay valleys. these were the highs from today. highs tomorrow are going to shave another 4, maybe 5 degrees. i think we're going to see lots of 70s in the inland bay valleys. upper 70s. these are some of the highs we saw today. 82 in concord. watch what happens tomorrow. temperatures drop off, as sort of a cooler weather pattern visits the bay area. this is your forecast for tomorrow. as we go towards the bay area

a bay area school district is taking a hard stand against bullies. 11 students have already been suspended under that no tolerance policy. >> reporter: vallejo school district in nearly every grade, bullies exist, and parents are aware.

in just the first few weeks of school, 11 students have been suspended for bullying. the school superintendent, ramona bishop. >> we do have an issue with lesbian and gay students being harassed and bullied. we also have that larger issue around many of our students feeling unsafe on campus, so it perspective. >> i feel the least safe during lunchtime. >> reporter: a new anti- bullying documentary is set to be shown in classes. they required the district to have some sort of anti-bullying curriculum. the district complied, but the education videos were coming from out of the city. >> from ground spark. they're actually very well done, with you our community was saying, those aren't our kids, those aren't our issues. >> reporter: they're real

vallejo students telling stories about being bullied. it opens the doors to possible solutions at home and at school. >> they're pushing for the bullying to stop. >> reporter: as for the suspensions, the superintendent says she stands behind every one of them. mike mibach, ktvu, channel 2 news. new at 10:00, a new report shows the number of homeowners spenterring the foreclosure process jumped last month. according to listing firm realty track. up 33% from july. analysts say the increase is due to banks resolving paperwork problems and can now take swifter action. the banks are on track to repossess about 800,000 homes this year. the housing bubble and foreclosures have cost oakland homeowners $12 billion in property value losses since 2008. the alliance of californians for community empowerment plans

perry here in california. the president holds a larger lead over rick perry, 54-35%. michele bachmann is set to be in the bay area tomorrow, she will be attending a breakfast in san rafael. we will bring you coverage of the event on tomorrow morning's newscast. governor jerry brown honored more than a dozen public safety officers today with the medal of valor. among the honorees, a paramedic who's daring rescue saved a woman's life. >> the medal of valor to firefighter, fire engineer paramedic. >> reporter: in april of last year, dave manzek was lowered from a helicopter and pulled a woman from a rain soaked canal. he ended up in the cold rushing water for about ten seconds, the longest ten seconds of his life. the governor said those honored today can teach all of us a

valuable lesson. >> we have to take what you did here and project it through the whole society. each of us our own way can be heros. can be courageous. >> in all, 13 people from across the state received the medal of valor. governor brown is warning lawmakers that soon they could be singing the blues. the governor said today, he may veto many of the 600 bills that are now sitting on his desk. the governor said there are not 600 problems the state needs to find solutions for. brown says he is focused on common sense laws that will not add to the state's budget problems. rural residents south of napa have been without running water for two days now. this isn't the first time. >> there it is. >> reporter: households in south napa are hauling water for their animals and gardens after getting the word -- >> over the next 24 to 48 hours until repairs can be completed.

a teenage boy is facing charges after crashing into a deli in san rafael. chp officers were trying to pull him over when he crashed into at famous market and deli. the teenager is treated for injuries. he now faces dui. fortunately, no one was hurt. 23-year-old emily dunn died after being hit by a muni bus as she was crossing hartford street, not far from castro street. she moved here to take a job

with a production company. the attorney representing dunn's family say they expect to file a claim either tomorrow or friday. police in san leandro say they have yet to determine why two homes around the corner from each other were hit with molotov cocktails. it sparked a fire in the house. no one was home, but an alert neighbor smelled fire and called police. about six hours earlier, someone threw a molotov cocktail in west meryl court. that did not start a fire. no one was hurt in either incident. in news of the world tonight, in afghanistan, american officials today acknowledged that yesterday's 20 hour siege gave the

insurgents a propaganda victory. each accusing the other of putting afghan civilians in harm's way. in rome, hundreds of demonstrators fired paint at riot officers today. in italy's parliament gave final approval to measures that include higher taxes, pension reform, and major cuts in spending. to reduce the deficit by $74 billion. in haiti, protesters turned violent today in the capital of port-au-prince. they demanded that united nations peacekeepers withdraw from their country. they're upset about a sexual assault. last year, troops from nepal were linked to a cholera outbreak that ended up killing more than 6,000 people. two tech savvy east bay

high school students are being honored for creating an app. their app was launched this evening. it allows people to get news and information about the fremont unified school district on their mobile devices. the students were asked what it feels like to see their project become an app. >> it's absolutely awesome. i love talking about stuff that i work on. especially when it can help my community. >> it's really cool to see a dream we had realized, finally come into culmination. >> when the two were asked when their ipo launch might be. they laughed and said no comment. san jose's guadalupe river earns a dubious distinction. how the city is trying to change that distinction, and how you can get involved. bill martin is back in just six minutes with the change we can expect this weekend.

the list of the bay area's top hot spots is out. and it spans across the bay. robert honda tells us who made the list and what one city is already doing to clean up its act. >> reporter: the guadalupe river runs from the santa cruz mountains into neighborhoods in downtown san jose. some people who live along the river weren't surprised to see it listed in the top five trash spots. >> it's just covered by plastic bags and papers, toilet paper. mattresses. it's pretty bad. >> reporter: that type of trash also put damon's slough on the list. along with baxter creek in richmond. other water ways are catching up. >> this is one of the creeks

that's the trashiest around san francisco bay. but there are several hundred of them like this. >> reporter: during last year's coastal clean up day volunteers cleaned up 172 tons of waste. another source of waste, homeless encampments. one man who lives underneath a guadalupe bridge admits the homeless contribute. but says a lot of people sneak in to dump garbage. >> when the rains come, and this thing starts flooding all kinds of stuff come down the river. >> reporter: save the day points out, san jose is showing what to do about the trash. saying the city passed the toughest plastic bag ban. it will still take years to clean up the guadalupe river, but it might get it off the top five list of hot spots. more details now, the other four trash hot spots identified by save the bay are mission creek in san francisco, damon

slough in oakland, baxter creek in richmond, and pulgas creek in san carlos. for more about the cleanup, just go to ktvu.com. a new government report puts most of the blame on bp for last year's oil spill in the gulf coast. the report criticizes the weigh the wells casing was installed. the deepwater horizonnen oil rig exploded in april of 2010, killing 11 people. almost 5 million gallons of oil ended up leaking into the gulf of mexico. electronic cigarettes could be added to the list of atells banned on airplanes. the obama administration proposed keeping them on the banned list. nasa revealed plans for a huge rocket designed to take

astronauts farther than they've ever gone before. it's larger than the rockets that took men to the moon. nasa hopes to launch the first test flight in 2017. later, regular flights to asteroids and even mars. the costs range from 18 billion to $35 billion a year. fog back in the forecast tonight. it was cooler today than it was yesterday. it will be cooler tomorrow still. the cooling trend continues. been talking about it really since sunday is when it began. it's been a slow cooling tremendous. look at the fog across san francisco right now. fog in all the bay area neighborhoods in the san francisco area. also, in the marin county area. so the fog is really pushing inland tonight. a cooler start to your day, and a cooler ending to your day tomorrow. these are the current temperatures. interesting to me, when i look at 59 in concord, you can see the cooling influences of the marine layer, already to concord. this time of year, maybe 63 out

here. but it's 59 degrees. 58 in livermore. the cool, most air, the marine air, the fog, the moisture, the cooler temperatures are into the inland bay valleys. that is step one in cooping the techs down tomorrow. step two, days are getting shorter, nights are getting longer and we're not that far from the autumnal equinox. it's been cool by the cliff house. san francisco at the far end of the west side. you're going to go 70s out there, in the martinez area. livermore valley. not 80s, but 70 in morgan hill, by evergreen. mid-70s that's the hot spot tomorrow. they're going to continue that way as we head into the following day. so low pressure here. that's the main mechanism. it gets close to us, as it has been doing all summer. bumps up the fog. that's what we're seeing right
